Benefits of Limestone

Limestone countertops can make a beautiful addition to your home. They provide lovely solutions in both your kitchen and your bath. The natural beauty of limestone and its ability to bring a touch of the outdoors inside your home is one of the primary reasons that limestone has become another popular choice in countertops in recent years. Limestone is a sedimentary rock with qualities similar to marble. Limestone has some particularly vibrant shades of blue that are just not available in other stones. The decision to use a natural stone in your kitchen is an environmentally friendly choice to make when designing your kitchen or bath. Limestone is formed from sand and the shells of aquatic life, and frequently includes small fossils and shells.  Some homeowners particularly value this unique aspect of limestone countertops. Limestone countertops are very resistant to humidity which makes them an excellent choice for the occasionally steam atmospheres of kitchens and baths.

Limestone countertops are made of a porous material and you should consider this when making your selection.  The porous material of limestone makes it vulnerable to stains from standing water, soap, or spills. The good news is that the porous nature of limestone makes it easier to clean and remove stains as well, it will simply require more care than other countertops options might.

Stains on limestone countertops can be removed quite easily by applying a poultice. This poultice will need to sit for a specified amount of time (generally 48 hours).  During that time, it will literally absorb the stain from your limestone countertop. After the poultice has absorbed the stain, you simply rinse away both the poultice and your stain and you will have clean, stain free countertops once again.

The Downside

The biggest downside when it comes to limestone countertops for many is the price. Limestone is a very heavy material and is often cumbersome to transport. One other downside to using limestone countertops is that you are limited to a selection of what is being quarried and available at the time you are purchasing.  You can control the cost of limestone countertops by trying to purchase remnants instead of a solid slab. Remnants are often lower priced and offer the same beauty at a small savings. Another choice you can make in order to have the beauty of limestone for a fraction of the price is to use limestone tiles for your countertops rather than a slab.
Deciding to use limestone countertops in your home is a decision you should not enter into blindly. These beautiful countertops may require a little more work than others but their beauty can make up for that.  Installation of a limestone countertop may be something very expensive, but you have to keep in mind that this counter top, unlike other not-so-durable ones, would last forever if taken care properly.
