Wood Types Used

Red Adler - A fine grained hardwood similar to Cherry, Birch and Maple.  Pale yellow (tan) to reddish brown in color.  A soft, light wood with even texture and straight grain that accepts stain well.
White Birch – medium hardwood, similar to Maple but not as consistent in color as Maple, good based for solid color finishes, accepts stain unevenly; mottles.  Mottling is a blotchy appearance evident due to various densities in the wood.  Not recommended for darker stains.  Off white color, medium density, fine texture, straight grain.
Cherry – darkens with age at a very fast rate, pitch marks (worm holes), mineral streaks, medicum hardwood, accepts stain well.  Cherry is especially sensitive to light.  Light will cause the wood to darken/redden significantly.  Medium reddish brown color, medium density, fine texture, straight grain.
Hickory-Hardwood, mineral streaks, accepts stain evenly, known for its’ “wild” contrasting light and dark streaks.  Light brown color, hard density, medium coarse texture, straight grain, strong, elastic, hard.  Hickory has white sapwood and reddish/dark heartwood.
Red Oak-hardwood, open grain, accepts stain well.  Will darken slightly with age.  Grain pattern very evident when a solid color finish is applied.  May vary in color from light to dark with possible shades of green

Door Styles

Flat door styles are either totally flat (a slab look) or include a flat panel. The frame (stiles and rails) can be squared off, have beveled edges, or even a rope molding look The door on the right has another piece called a muntin bar. It is essentially a stile in the panel portion of the door, and these are seen almost exclusively on flat panel doors. These bars can be either horizontal or vertical.

Square Raised door styles are pretty much the same as the more decorated flat doors, but the panel is raised. Again, these can be very ornate, but it is the panel that defines doors in this category.

Arch and Cathedral
Arch or Cathedral door styles can be of the flat panel or raised panel variety. Arch doors have a simple curve to the inner edge of the top rail, and cathedral doors have a fancier pattern.
